The Brain Longevity Program
The era of magic-bullet drug therapy for memory loss is over!
Startling medical research reveals that how you live your life today may determine how well your brain power and memory works tomorrow. That memory function is a consequence of lifestyle can be seen by the results that diet, physical exercise, and stress-relaxation have on maximizing your brain power.
All of these topics are vitally important because the benefits of the pharmaceutical drugs used to treat Alzheimer's disease have recently been called into question.
The Brain Longevity™ Program, based on The Four Pillars of Brain Longevity™ is a comprehensive holistic medicine program for the treatment of age-associated memory impairment, for the prevention and delay of Alzheimer's disease, and for the creation of optimal mental function.
The first principle of my Brain Longevity™ Program is that the brain is flesh and blood, just like the rest of your body. Therefore, your brain will respond to lifestyle measures you take to strenghten it.
If you can recognize the power that this complementary or integrative medical approach has on the whole brain, not just on one isolated chemical or gene, it becomes clear why the program is so successful.
This program is characterized by simplicity and common sense, for a simple reason: This therapy is a lifestyle program - not a "magic bullet" treatment - and is therefore relatively more patient-managed than physician-managed.
For the last 18 years I have been working exclusively with patients who wanted to optimize mental function, as well as prevent and treat short term memory loss and Alzheimer's disease.
In 2003, the US Surgeon General told me: 'Dr. Khalsa, your work should now be considered mainstream." I am grateful these concepts are more widely accepted now than they were 10 years ago. The University of Arizona, the Mayo Clinic, and the Alzheimer's Association are just a few of the major organizations that have embraced this concept and are now educating people about it.
"I am the primary caregiver for my mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. I am very impressed with your program as outlined in Brain Longevity because it gave me tremendous hope for her future." - Isumi, Japan

Pillar #1 - DIET
Building a better memory, preventing loss of mental function, and impacting Alzheimer's disease is, in large measure, dependent upon your lifestyle, not just your genes.
Since you eat so often, your diet plays a critical role in the health of your brain. A healthy diet reduced in portion size and hence calories, high in protein (but reduced in animal protein), mixed with right amounts of good fat and complex carbohydrates, is the eating plan of choice to improve your memory, lessen your risk of Alzheimer's, and reduce the symptoms of memory loss.
My 3 favorite brain foods are:
Salmon
Spinach
Blueberries
In addition to the foods you eat, vitamins and brain specific nutrients are very important to protect your brain cells and to provide your brain with adequate amounts of the nutrients that a normal diet lacks.
My 3 favorite brain supplements are:
- Omega - 3 Fish Oils
- Phosphatidyl Serine
- Huperzine - A
"I learnt so much from Brain Longevity, especially nutrition for the brain. I love the brain nutrients that aid mental clarity and protect the brain from the damaging effects of free radicals." - Lisa T., Boulder, CO

Pillar #2 - STRESS MANAGEMENT
All of my research shows that feeling stressed out and being prone to psychological distress could destroy your memory and may cause Alzheimer's disease.
Chronic, unbalanced stress raises cortisol levels in the blood. Cortisol is a memory-robbing chemical, which turns your memory center into a toxic dump, killing brain cells by the thousands. Cortisol stops glucose from entering your neurons, it blocks your neurotransmitter function, and causes brain cells to become injured and die if they are not saved.
Stress management techniques such as Tai Chi, massage, guided imagery, yoga, or meditation can help. Thanks to my years of meditation practice, I have compiled a series of easy, specific mind/body exercises for stress relief have been part of my clinical program for over a decade and have been found to help restore brain power and improve my patient's memory.
"I enjoyed Brain Longevity a lot and I even purchased a few copies to give to some of my students. I really enjoyed the complete explanation about the damage stress puts on the brain and body. I has backed up a lot of my preaching about reducing stress in order to be truly healthy." - Guy Mezger, Dallas, TX.

Pillar #3 - EXERCISE
There are three types of exercise that are important in improving your memory.
The first is physical exercise, such as walking and aerobic conditioning. Physical exercise has been shown to reduce memory loss by 50%.
The second is mental exercise, such as crossword puzzles and other memory-enhancing games, which I call brain aerobics or brain gymastics. This type of exercise can reduce the development of Alzheimer's by an incredible 70%!
The third one is called mind/body exercise. The Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation, of which I am the president and medical director, has concluded a very innovative research project utilizing the same mind/body exercise found in the Better Memory Kit and on the CD. This exercise has a very regenerating, balancing, and healing effect on the brain.

"I like Brain Longevity very much because in it I found many answers I was looking for with regards to my brain power." - Frank C., Los Angeles, CA.

Pillar # 4 - PHARMACEUTICALS
There are a few pharmaceutical drugs that are currently used to treat mild to moderate symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. They are Aricept, Exelon, Namenda, and Reminyl. Please discuss their use with your doctor, but keep in mind that these are real medicines and they may have side effects.
Hormone replacement therapy has also shown promise in preventing memory loss, though it has become highly controversial because of negative side effects. I believe that it can be good practice to replace hormones under knowledgeable medical care.
Conclusion:
By implementing these 4 Pillars of the Brain Longevity™ Program you will maximize your mind power and can rest assured that you are following the state-of-the-art program to prevent the loss of your memory later.
