Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.

Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine and completed his anesthesiology training at the University of California, San Francisco, where he served as Chief Resident. He is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management, has studied mind-body medicine at Harvard, and is a graduate of UCLA’s Medical Acupuncture for Physicians program. He is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2015, he was appointed Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Integrative Medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

In 1987, “Dr. Dharma”, as he is known, established the first holistic pain management program in the southwestern U.S. at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque. He was then recruited in 1990 to become the founding director of the Acupuncture, Stress Medicine, and Chronic Pain Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix. Dr. Dharma became the first physician to advocate a healthy lifestyle—including managing stress and incorporating good diet/exercise programs—to encourage the prevention and treatment of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. In 1993, he founded the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation and has served as the foundation’s President and Medical Director ever since.

In May of 2003, Dr. Dharma was invited to testify before Congress about his work in Alzheimer’s and called upon them to fund a national education and outreach campaign designed to inform the public about the benefits of an integrative medical approach to Alzheimer’s prevention. It was then that the U.S. Surgeon General, Richard Carmona, MD/MPH, said to Dr. Dharma, “Your work in the field of memory loss should now be considered mainstream.”

Dr. Dharma is among the world’s leading authorities on integrative medicine and has written extensively. One of his most popular books, Brain Longevity, has been translated into 12 languages. His other bestsellers include The Pain Cure, Meditation As Medicine, Food As Medicine, The New Golden Rules, and The End of Karma. Dr. Dharma lectures and consults worldwide and is an ordained minister and yogi. He lives in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife Kirti, who is from Rome, Italy.
