The Man Behind The Work

A doctor who went looking for more

Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa began his career at the center of Western medicine, serving as a chief resident in anesthesiology at the University of California, San Francisco. He was trained, as he later put it, to use powerful drugs to put people to sleep.

A turning point changed his course. He came to believe that the deeper work of a physician was not to sedate, but to help people wake up, and to draw on the body’s own capacity to heal through nutrition, movement, the relief of stress, and the quieting of the mind.

He became one of the first physicians in the country to bring meditation and yoga into mainstream medical care, and he founded the Southwest’s first holistic pain program. In 1993, together with his wife Kirti, he founded the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation. A twelve-minute meditation he studied has since been examined for its effect on memory at UCLA, the University of Pennsylvania, and West Virginia University. In 2003 he was invited to testify before Congress on the role that lifestyle plays in protecting the brain.

The Heart Of His Work

For most of the last century, medicine believed the aging brain could only decline. Dr. Dharma came to believe something far more hopeful, and he gathered the science to stand behind it. The brain, he taught, is living tissue that answers to how we live. It keeps forming new connections. It can be nourished, challenged, and strengthened at any age.

He liked to remind people that the brain is flesh and blood, and that what works for the heart works for the head. Good food, movement, rest, and steady circulation serve the mind as surely as they serve the body. It is why he placed ordinary daily habits, rather than any single miracle, at the very center of his work.

If there is one force working against the aging mind, he taught, it is chronic stress. He described the stress hormone cortisol in vivid terms, comparing its effect on the memory to something like battery acid when it floods the body day after day. Your First Practice

Begin with the breath

Dr. Dharma often began with the simplest thing we do. He liked to revise Descartes, offering in place of “I think, therefore I am” a version of his own. The breath, he taught, is the bridge between body and mind, the first and most available way to calm stress and bring steadiness to the brain.

Here is a simple practice to begin. It asks nothing of your beliefs, and only a few minutes of your day.

  1. Sit comfortably, spine tall and shoulders soft, hands resting in your lap.
  2. Close your eyes. Breathe in slowly through the nose to a count of four.
  3. Hold gently for a count of four.
  4. Release slowly through the nose for a count of four.
  5. Continue for three minutes. When the mind wanders, and it will, simply return to the count.

That is all. A few quiet minutes, practiced daily, is how the mind is tended. Dr. Dharma taught that a new practice takes about forty days to take root and become part of who you are. So give it forty days. When a student once asked her teacher why, after so many years, he still practiced each morning, he answered simply, “Because I want to stay a master.”

Four ideas he spent a life proving

Long before brain health was an industry, these were radical claims. He made them in books, in clinics, and before Congress, and then he helped fund the research to test them.

What you eat is not fuel for the brain. It is information. He argued that diet belongs in the clinic, as a tool a doctor reaches for, decades before that idea had a conference circuit.

Chronic stress is not a feeling. It is a physical force acting on memory. His clinical career was built on treating it, first in pain medicine, then in prevention.
